Twitter, breakfast and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet

His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet

If you follow me on Twitter, you have probably come across my daily routine of addressing His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet about his breakfast habits.

I am a huge fan of the Dalai Lama and have a great fondness for the Buddhist teachings, but when it comes to his Twitter skills I think there is a lot for His Holiness to learn.

The NEXT social network…

I hear this question asked ALL the time… What is the NEXT social network?

Despite the goliath that is Facebook and the young upstart Twitter, there are those who think that Foursquare is leading us down the path of a new type of geo-social network. Other, considerably more niche social networks are popping up all the time, offering us the chance to organise ourselves into community groups around activities such as taking photographs or listening to music.

I have no idea what the NEXT social network will be, but I do know what I hope the one after that will be… Everybody out in the REAL world talking to each other without fear or prejudice.

Can hope be delivered in 140 characters?

I truly believe that Twitter will bring about the next great renaissance in human civilisation. I REALLY do!

Whatever you might think about that statement, it cannot be denied that every single second of every single day we see a deluge of tweets about people doing good and that is why I get SO frustrated when I see opportunities to amplify those positive emotions wasted. And my public enemy number one for wastage is the official account from Twitter highlighting the forces of good… @hope140

Happiness doesn't have to cost the Earth…

Statistician Nic Marks asks why we measure a nation’s success by its productivity – instead of by the happiness and well-being of its people. He introduces the Happy Planet Index, which tracks national well-being against resource use (because a happy life doesn’t have to cost the earth).

“I know there are challenges ahead, there may be trouble ahead, but I fear no one. I don’t care. I have been to the mountain top, and I have seen the Promised Land.” – Martin Luther King

Who's with me?

Spartans! Ready your breakfast and eat hearty... For tonight, we dine in hell!

Social media has the capacity to be the great leveller.

There are many stories of heroic Davids defeating mighty Goliaths, although not quite cutting off their heads, through the use of connections made possible by services such as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube etc. But a recent campaign from eBay for Charity has left me feeling that maybe the Goliaths need to take some moral responsibility and stop fighting altogether.

“The world will know that free men stood against a tyrant, that few stood against many, and before this battle was over, even a god-king can bleed.” – King Leonidas

Boundaries of Space… Boundaries of Time…

John Cleese explains his methods of dealing with creativity, interruptions and how to create your very own Tortoise enclosure that will allow your unconscious mind the space, and the time, to come out and play.

Most people who have absolutely no idea what they’re doing, have absolutely no idea that they have no idea of what they’re doing. It explains a great deal of life…

Faces in the crowd

What is it about certain faces that seem to make a connection?

I’m sure it can’t just be me that feels there are people that you walk past everyday that immediately make you feel at ease and give you the impression that you could just walk up, say “Hello” and you would have a new friend.

Is it purely physical, or is there a stranger force at work here?

#Lesanto50 #CozyTweetUp Birthday Pot

Glenn Le SantoIf you’re a Twitter user then you must have stumbled across, or been shouted at by, @lesanto (a.k.a Glenn Le Santo).

Glenn is one of the hardest working people I know and is always ready to help others when the need arises, so now I’m asking you to give a little back.

Today marks a particular milestone in Glenn’s life, and pays testament to the fact that even old people can be cool.

Glenn has reached the ripe old age of 50 and @DarenBBC and I would like to ask you to dig deep and donate whatever you can so that we can give Glenn the birthday he deserves.

Our deepest fear…

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.’ We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

CHaRiTY – Collaboration. Honesty. Recklessness. Transparency. Yackety-Yak!

After hearing about the launch of CharityComms 2020, I just knew I had to get involved.

Each participant was asked to contribute what they thought would be the five most significant trends that would affect charity communications in the next 10 years, and an accompanying image that represented their vision.

Charities represented in the initiative include Marie Curie Cancer Care, Amnesty International, Macmillan Cancer Support, UNICEF, Friends of the Earth, The Scout Association, and many more. There’s also a host of influential thinkers in the charity comms space who have contributed, including Jonathan Waddingham at JustGiving, Rachel Beer at beautiful world, Steve Bridger and Amy Sample Ward.

“The combined vision of so many influential thinkers in the charity sector has produced a unique insight into the future of communications. We hope CharityComms 2020 will provide ideas and inspiration to enable charities to tackle the challenges of the coming decade with confidence.” – Ben Matthews, founder of Bright One
