Do campers dream of hygienic sheep?

As someone who is relatively new to the camper van life…

I bought a VW California during the COVID lockdown when the world was forever changed and we were all reminded how fragile and short our time on this planet is, but enough of the philosophical introspection.

… I am always keen to try out new things that can improve my experience, especially when it comes to getting a good nights sleep.

Fortuitously, I know a guy who knows a guy that makes some of the best bedtime additions on the market. Baavet pride themselves in making their products exclusively in the UK, using wool from British farms and without the use of any harmful chemicals.

I was lucky enough to be given the chance to trial one of their duvets, and a mattress topper, for a few nights to see if they were worthy enough of the limited space available to the California camper.

I love the smell of livestock in the morning!

Firstly, let’s address the elephant-sized sheep in the room. When you initially open up your Baavet you’re going to be alarmed by the new fragrance that greets your olfactory bulb – unless, like myself, you grew up in the country. You will start to wonder if the confined space of your van is suddenly going to become a Smell-O-Vision episode of Countryfile. But be not afraid fellow traveller, for this slightly ‘sheepy’ smell will soon disappear after airing the duvet in the sun for a day.

All’s wool that ends wool.

So why should you choose a Baavet over a traditional sleeping bag or duvet?

Well, Wool is a naturally self cleaning fibre that actively repels dust mites, mould spores, and bacteria. It also has the ability to wick away moisture. Wool is naturally clean – If your duvet isn’t visibly soiled then there’s no need to wash it, hang it on the line on a sunny day and your duvet will be as fresh as the day you bought it. But more importantly than all of that is its ability to regulate temperature.

The temperature inside a camper van can be varied, at best, and this leads to restless nights moving various appendages in and out of the sleeping bag trying to find the optimal level of heat comfort. After a few nights under, and on top of, my Baavet bedding I can honestly say it has transformed my sheepysleepytime.

I no longer find myself constantly seeking heat equilibrium and, besides the odd late night reveller waking me from my slumber, find myself sleeping through till dawn with ease. In fact I love the Baavet so much that I use it on my bed at home, along with a Baavet pillow which I purchased myself.

You see, wool isn’t just an insulator like polyester and feather. Wool is actually a regulator, it regulates your body temperature the same way as it does on the sheep. When it’s hot the wool passes the heat mainly in the form of moisture from the sheep’s body out and when its cold its keeps the heat in, and it will do the same for you. But the amazing thing about wool is that it will actually regulate the temperatures of two different people in the same bed – so no more fights over the duvet.

Baa-ram-ewe! Baa-ram-ewe! To your breed, your fleece, your clan be true!

Would I recommend a Baavet for you next adventure?

100% yes!

In fact, Baavet are so confident of the quality of their product that you can try their duvets for 30 days and if they don’t do what they say, or for any other reason whatsoever, they will replace it or refund your money. Ewe can’t say fairer than that.
